What is English literature?

A lot of people starting to learn English literature often ask how extensive English literature is. It is not something not useful to ask about it because there have been various answers as well as different opinions about it.

We have to admit that most of common people knowing nothing about literature believe that English literature is literature written and/or published in the UK and US. Meanwhile, many other people consider it as any literary work written in English language. It makes sense but is not a totally accurate perception.

First off, English literature MUST BE WRITTEN in English language.

The language is a key to defining English literature. It means it is not an English literary work if not originally written in English language. It also means that any literary work translated into English cannot be seen as an example of English literary works.

Automatically, it also becomes an answer to the question "is English literature only limited to literature in the UK and US?", because there are a lot of non-British and non-American authors who write literary works in English Language.

Does it mean that all literary works written in English are works of English literature?

It is, of course, not. It is not only the language the aspect to consider when you are trying to define English literature. We also need to take into account the social, historical, and political aspects of the authors/writers and also the countries to which the belong.

In other works, where (in what country) the work is written and who writes it should be taken into account when defining English literature.

  1. English literature is written in a country or area that belongs to the British Empire and/or was a part of the Empire in the past.
    • It includes countries in the British Isles, i.e. England, Scotland, Wales, and North Ireland (Republic of Ireland is usually excluded due to its separation from the United Kingdom in early 1920s)
    • It includes the US
    • It includes some British Commonwealth s

Who is the Father of English Literature?

Who is the father of English literature?

He is Geoffrey Chaucer (tʃɔːsər/; c. 1343 – 25 October 1400) considered as many as the father of English literature.

The biggest reason is that he is the first man of letter in England who used modern English as the language of his works.

Speaking of Chaucer, he is known for he was the most important figure in literature in the period of Middle English, ranging between 1066 and 1500, initiated by the Norman Conquest on September 28th, 1066 and ended by the first introduction of printing press in England.

Famous as an English man of letter, including a poet and an author, Chaucer was also a diplomat as well as courtier, philosopher, and bureaucrat.

Australian English Literature?

1. Why is there a term: Australian-English Literature?

The term "Australian-English Literature" represents a 'kind' of English literature that is located in Australia and written by Australians. You may question "why is Australia involved when it comes to English literature.

Well, we need to talk about the relation between Aussie and England and United Kingdom in a broader sense to answer such a question.

2. What is the relation between Australia and England in term of literature?

Australia and things within it are closely related to England as well as the UK in general. We cannot forget the fact that Australia was a British colonial continent before becoming a Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, a dominion of  the British Empire.

Since the time of the "First Fleet", initiating the Western history of Australia, the Australian-English literature' history has started. British 'migrants' coming in to Sidney for the first time didn't not only bring convicts but also their culture, including the literary tradition.

Webby in The Cambridge Companions to Australian Literature states that "Books arrived in Australia in 1788 with Governor Phillip and the first shiploads of convicts, officials and marines, as did paper, pens and ink." (2009:34)

Such all tools simply had a role in starting literacy in the continent that led to the emergence and then development of Australia-English literature.

The term "Australia-English Literature" also is used to distinguish between  Pre-colonial Indigenous Australian Literature and all 'post-colonial' Australian Literature written in English by Australians of any race.
